Both local hockey players and NHL pros alike will be gathering in Saskatoon on Friday to play for a cause.
The all-day Hockey Helps the Homeless tournament is taking place between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at Merlis Belsher Place.
Event Chair Bob Fawcett says the tournament began in 1992 in Ontario and has since spread to Canadian cities from coast to coast.
Fawcett explains that over 180 athletes will be taking part in the local event.
These thirteen Saskatoon teams have spent recent weeks fundraising and have already collected over $100,000.
“Every team raises money, and whichever raises the most money gets the first pick of the pros in the draft.” Pros to choose from include Rich and Ron Sutter, Matthew Barnaby, Bernie Nicholls, and Brad May.
“We’d like to reach the $200,000 mark eventually for the tournament. This year, I’m thinking $150,000-$160,000 is probably something that’s attainable.”
The funds collected will be split three ways between the Saskatoon Food Bank, the Friendship Inn, and the YWCA women’s shelter. Fawcett encourages the public to both donate and come watch the free event.
