It’s my Parting Shot for some Weekend Short Shots…..
It would take way too long to go through all of the combinations, possibilities and permutations to determine who could finish first in the W-H-L’s East Division once this weekend is done. And, that’s the easy one to figure in the Eastern Conference as none of the four opening round match-ups are set and only Lethbridge in fourth place and Swift Current in eighth know their exact place of finish!
No matter what happens this weekend, if you would have told me after the W-H-L’s trade deadline passed that the Saskatoon Blades would still be in the mix to finish first in the East Division, I’d have said not a chance! According to the Elite Prospects website, the Bridge City Bunch are the fourth youngest of the 22 teams in the league and the second youngest to qualify for the playoffs behind Seattle. On the other end of the spectrum, Prince Albert is tied for the fourth oldest team and Brandon is smack-dab in the middle of the pack! In other words, the Blue and Gold are underdogs going into the weekend, no matter how you want to slice it – which is just fine by them!!
How about Spencer Shugrue, how do you do?! The former Saskatoon Blades defenceman, dubbed Mister Game 7 for his playoff scoring heroics for the Bridge City Bunch two springs ago, did it again yesterday – scoring the winning goal in the fifth overtime period to send Toronto Metropolitan University past Mount Royal and into the U Sports men’s hockey semi-finals! That game going that long meant a late start to the second game yesterday, which may have played a role in defending champion New Brunswick losing in overtime to host Ottawa! What a chance now for the Saskatchewan Huskies to win the national title! If they do, a big assist to Spencer Shugrue!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
