Although it’s officially spring, an Alberta weather system is tracking some winter conditions across the province Thursday.
Christy Climenhaga with Environment Canada says freezing rain, heavy snow, and poor visibility will begin Wednesday night in the Lloydminster region and travel east toward Kindersley.
Throughout the day Thursday, Saskatoon can expect 10-20 cm of heavy snow, which will fade into some light flurries by Friday.
“When we’re looking at our temperatures for Saskatoon, it looks like for tomorrow you will stay below the freezing mark, but just southeast of Saskatoon, the Kindersley area, that’s where that risk of freezing rain lies.”
Although the freezing rain will mainly impact southern Saskatchewan, Climenhaga says it’s been difficult to predict the duration or quantity.
“Just the way that our temperature profiles are set up, it does lead to that uncertainty for this system.”
She advises anyone with travel plans, or a long commute to work, to consider staying home on Thursday.
“It’s something to keep in mind that the roads will likely be pretty poor through most of the day. Traveling anywhere in Saskatchewan, especially with that freezing rain risk further south, it’s going to be poor travel conditions,” warns Climenhaga.
The system is also putting a chill in the air, with below seasonal temperatures around minus five sticking around until early next week.
