Joining Saskatoon, Regina has now also declared a homelessness crisis as of Wednesday evening. Regina city council moved the motion forward with a vote of 8-2.
In a written response, NDP Housing Critic April Chiefcalf wrote that city staff counted 824 people without shelter in a single night. She adds that the Sask. Party government has “no plan to fix this crisis. They are even sitting on 2,500 vacant housing units, and their latest budget only funds repairs for 285.”
For context, following Saskatoon’s Point in Time Homelessness count last year, surveyors suspect the city is home to roughly 1500 homeless people. This is triple the number of unhoused individuals counted during the 2022 PIT Homeless Count. Regina’s estimated population in 2025 is 282,032, whereas Saskatoon has 352,000 residents as of 2025.
