The Saskatoon Police Service says on Monday shortly before 4:00 p.m. they were alerted about a wanted man at a hotel in the 1300 block of 8th Street East. Responding officers spotted a suspect leaving the hotel, a short foot pursuit ensued but officers lost sight of him.
The Canine Unit was brought in and tracked a suspect down an alley, over a fence into a backyard and right to the back door. Occupants of the house, located in the 1300 block of Main Street, exited and said an unknown man was inside.
Police secured the area and sent a Police Service Dog (PSD) in, to locate and possibly apprehend the suspect. The PSD cleared the home and stopped in the basement alerting officers something or someone was near a large deepfreeze. Officers saw the lid of the freezer open slightly before closing and when it opened again the Police Service Dog tried to apprehend the suspect, but the freezer lid slammed shut, on the head of the PSD.
When officers located the male suspect hiding in the freezer, they say he continued to resist arrest until he was placed in the back of a patrol car. In a social media post the Saskatoon Police Service says the suspect told officers, he gives full credit of the arrest to the Police Service Dog.
The 25-year-old Saskatoon man was charged with two counts of Break and Enter to Commit a Crime, Resisting Arrest and Breach of Release. The Police Service Dog had to make a trip to the vet and lost a tooth, but the post indicates he will be okay and ready for service again soon.
