A rainfall warning has been issued for areas around Regina, Humboldt, Wynyard, Wadena, Lanigan, Foam Lake, Fort Qu’appelle, Indian Head, Lumsden, Pilot Butte, Estevan, Weyburn, Radville, Milestone, Kamsack, Canora Preeceville, Yorkton, Melville, Esterhazy, Moosomin, Kipling, Wawota, Grenfell. Environment Canada says a developing low pressure system will spread rain with embedded thunderstorms into southeastern Saskatchewan beginning late in the day Thursday.
The heaviest rain will fall on Thursday night into Friday morning. Widespread amounts of 30 to 60 mm are forecast. The heaviest rain will taper off by late Friday but showery weather will last into the first half of the weekend. In addition to the heavy rain, strong winds gusting as high as 80 km/h will be possible overnight Thursday into Friday. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
A special weather statement has been issued for Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain, Moose Jaw, Pense, Central Butte, Craik, Assiniboia, Gravelbourg, Coronach, Carlyle, Oxbow, Carnduff, Bienfait, and Stoughton.
Environment Canada says a broad area of rain will develop over the United States on Thursday and move into portions of the southeastern Prairies on Thursday night tapering off Friday night and rain will be heavy at times. A storm total rainfall for areas under the special weather statement will reach 30 to 50 millimetres in many places. Embedded showers or thunderstorms could produce locally higher rainfall totals in excess of 60 mm.
This storm is still in the early stages of formation in the Central Plains of the United States. Environment Canada points out that forecasts may change as it takes shape over the coming 12 to 24 hours.
