The governments of Saskatchewan and Alberta along with industrial stakeholders have secured a regulation exemption from the federal government for smoother travel of oil service rigs between the four western provinces. The exemption means service rig convoys do not need to complete daily logs or have an electronic logging device. Service rigs are used to service and maintain oil wells.
The two provinces signed a Memorandum of Understanding back in 2019 to persuade the federal government to remove the red tape. Saskatchewan premier Scott Moe says the move is long overdue.
A news release from the province says other safety measures will continue. The exemption applies to all western Canada, from British Colombia through to Manitoba.
