After over seven years of collaboration and negotiations, Metis Nation-Saskatchewan has signed a self-government deal with the Government of Canada.
This new agreement builds on a previously signed agreement in 2019. A news release from the federal government says by signing this agreement the Government of Canada affirms that it recognizes the MN-S as the representative government of the Metis Nation in Saskatchewan, and formally recognizes that the Metis Nation has jurisdiction over their own internal core governance matters including citizenship, leadership selection and government operations.
The next step is federal legislation to provide a clear legal framework for putting a future core governance treaty into effect. MN-S President, Glen McCallum, says ““Our Métis ancestors fought for over a century to ensure recognition and respect from Canada, and today we are one step closer to achieving our goal of a constitutionally protected agreement with the federal government.”
Metis Nations in Alberta and Ontario also signed agreements today (Fri).
