You may have noticed city trucks picking up your compost in Saskatoon, that’s the green bins. But the composter is actually a private business. The city had indicated in a news release rolling out the program that the private composter would accept the waste – as in – the city would continue to pick it up.
Environmental Operations Manager Brock Storey says no additional collection trucks had to be purchased to pick up green bins when the city implemented a mandatory organics program. That’s because garbage collection in the summer has switched from weekly to bi-weekly. Green carts are also picked up bi-weekly so no additional trucks were needed.
Storey said, in an email to the CJWW newsroom, that the City of Saskatoon has actually reduced, because of a now bi-weekly schedule for green, black and blue carts the overall number of scheduled collections in the summer, by 6,500 carts weekly.
