The largest Metis cultural celebration in the country kicks off today, and it set to see over 20,000 people in attendance over 4 days. Back to Batoche began over 50 years ago in 1970, and Metis Nation Saskatchewan President Glen McCallum says each year since, Metis people have picked up additional knowledge on their traditions and ways to celebrate.
McCallum says this year the festival theme is Year of the Youth, with events such as volleyball tournaments, jigging and fiddling competitions, the rodeo, chuckwagon races, dancing, crafting, food trucks with traditional Metis cooking, and a mainstage for entertainment.
He adds that this year has been very productive in terms of reconciliation, and there is great cause for celebration. He says a few highlights of the year include signing Memorandums of Understanding with both the University of Saskatchewan and the federal government.
Over 100 dignitaries from both the federal and provincial governments, and universities, will be in attendance over the weekend to show their support.
McCallum says he expects an even larger turn out this year than in 2022, and hopes all attendants leave with the stories of the Metis people and are able to share them with the people at home, wherever home may be.
