Organizations that work to prevent violence and create safety for Indigenous women and girls are encouraged to apply for the provincial government’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls community response fund.
Angela Blondeau, the province’s Director of the First Nations and Metis Relations Unit, says for the last two years, $400,000 has been allocated to supporting organizations that creatively and effectively keep Indigenous women safe. Last year’s recipients include a wide variety of projects.
They included an Indigenous parenting program, a feast and round dance honouring those who are missing and murdered, a mural honouring missing and murdered Indigenous women, and a youth awareness workshop.
The fund was created alongside Indigenous women with lived experience. The idea was prompted by National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls conducted by the Canadian Government from 2016-2019. The deadline to apply was recently pushed back from October 4th to the end of the month.
