On a night of highlight reel goals and saves, the Saskatoon Blades had more of them as they subdued the pesky Pats 6-4 Friday night in Regina.
The home team opened the scoring, but the Bridge City Bunch tallied the next three goals and never looked back. But, the Pats did pull to within a goal of the Blue and Gold twice – 3-2 in the second period and 5-4 in the third frame – before captain Trevor Wong (pictured) secured the Blades’ 26th win of the season with an empty net tally. In fact, Wong was the first star of the game, adding a short-handed goal and chipping in two assists, one of them a phenomenal cross-ice saucer pass to Ben Saunderson for a goal. Tyler Parr also had two helpers while Egor Sidorov, Brandon Lisowsky and Vaughan Watterodt were able to beat Pats’ netminder Kelton Pyne, who made some sensational stops – the most notable of which was a glove grab of a labelled Sidorov one-timer in the second period. Sidorov’s goal was incredible as he deked to the forehand, then put the stick behind his back and his forehand shot eluded Pyne for another magical tally for the 19-year-old Anaheim draft pick. Saskatoon out-shot the Pats 43-27 in improving their season record to 26-8-3 and their run of consecutive games with at least one point in the standings to 14 (11-0-3) while Regina is winless in seven games (0-3-4) and dropped to 13-19-6 for the year. The Bridge City Bunch are right back in action Saturday, going north on Highway 11 to Prince Albert to face the Raiders.
