Two groups of concerned citizens are banding together to raise awareness around clear cutting in the southern fringe of Saskatchewan’s boreal forest. The Saskatchewan Forest Protect Network and the Big River Forest Advocates group are concerned about how close the clear cutting is getting to areas where residents live and where they camp and hold events, including at Ness Creek.
Spokesperson, Cathy Sproule says she is involved with the Big River group, and they have been urging the provincial government and industry to cut back on clear cutting in the area, because it is happening right next door to where people live. Sproule expect by sometime next month, they will be filing an application in court, alleging the government isn’t following the Resources Management Act, which talks about the requirement for balance with any forestry activity which includes industry, but also includes a balance with things like culture, heritage and recreation.
In the hopes of raising awareness and funds for their court application, there is a fundraiser on Saturday. It begins in the afternoon with a free “Teach-In” with guest speakers from 1 to 5 followed by a community supper and a Kitchen Party Music and Fundraiser event in the evening.
Teach-In 1-5pm (free) at St. George’s Senior Centre, 1235 20th Street West, Saskatoon
Community Supper: 5:30 to 7pm with food for purchase
Kitchen Party Music + Fundraiser: 7 – 11pm (admission $20, kids get in free)
