Lasting until May 12th, a post-apocalyptic tale with a twist will be taking the stage at Dancing Sky Theatre in Meacham, Saskatchewan.
The play is called ‘Greensleep: A Fairytale for the End of Days’. Kyle Kuchirka, who play’s ‘Huck’ in the production, says although the play has a post-apocalyptic setting, it was also written through a fairytale lens.
“Where most post-apocalyptic stories go is into the bleak, the end of days forever, and the end of the planet. This kind of goes in another direction, where we’re faced with what actually comes after human beings thinking that it’s the end of days.”
Kuchirka says the play touches on climate change, but from a different perspective than most people are used to hearing about.
“It’s more about human beings being the one creature on the planet that aren’t really listening to the rest of the living world. We’ve kind of separated ourselves, and nature is asking us to come back.”
He says the play gives nature a voice, with which it asks humans to start listening to the rest of the living world.
“I hope the audience walks away asking themselves ‘do we have to keep doing things the way we’ve been doing them, just because that’s the way it’s always been done?'”
He hopes the production makes the audience adjust the way they think about the world around them, much as acting in the play has done for him. Kuchirka adds that at some point in the play, the audience can expect the set to come alive through puppetry. There will also be aspects of dance, comedy, and original music.
The show runs at 7:30 on Thursdays and 8:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. There are also 2:30 matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are available at dancing sky theatre.com.
