Two months of the year, children in need no longer have access to the food programs hosted in schools.
That’s what the Food to Learn campaign is about.
Michael Kincade, Executive Director of Food Banks of Saskatchewan explains that last year a partnership was struck with the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation.
The STF donated $20,000 to kick off the campaign to help feed children and this year, has done the same.
Kincade says, “With summer holidays and those school food programs disappearing for the summer, sometimes those kids get left behind.”
He notes that the increasing cost of living has impacted everyone.
Last year alone Saskatchewan Food Banks saw a 24 per cent increase in usage and since 2019, it has been almost a 50 per cent increase.
Kincade points out that every month, food banks in the province serve 44,000 people.
Last year, the campaign helped raise over $71,000 for food banks in 36 communities across the province.
