Metis Elder Albert LeClair wanted a special place for members of his generation to gather and help Metis children and youth reconnect to the land through their traditions, culture, values and language.
A two-year vision came to fruition on Wednesday with the grand opening of the Dumont Lodge on the sacred grounds of Batoche, about 90 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
“With the guidance of our elders, our Nation and our Metis culture are in good hands,” said Metis Nation-Saskatchewan president Glen McCallum. “This is our moment to immerse visitors to Batoche this summer in Metis tradition and history in every sense.”
The $8-million, 18,000 square foot Dumont Lodge was built largely by Metis subcontractors and tradespeople. It is nestled in the forest and rolling hills of Batoche and will also be able to host corporate events to showcase Metis culture to a wider segment of the population.
