The importance of helmets is the message this summer from the Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association.
John Meed, the General Manager of the Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association, says all types of helmets are permittable for use on an ATV, as long as they have the D.O.T. certification sticker on the back, however, SATVA recommends closed-face helmets.
“Only because, in an altercation, the full-face protects your mouth, and we do see some jaw injuries, especially on a quad-style, because there is no seatbelt. If you get thrown forward your face can impact the handlebars.”
Meed says although most quad riders are good about wearing their helmets, he often sees side-by-side operators fall short in that department. He explains that even if the ATV has a roll bar, injuries can still occur.
“In a roll-over situation, even if you’re wearing your seatbelt, which you must do by law, your head can come into contact with the roll bar, which is not that far from your head.”
He adds that the helmet needs to fit snuggly in order for it to function properly. The foam inside a once tight-fitting helmet can degrade, making it crucial to replace your helmet every five to six years.
When keeping safety in mind, Meed also recommends saving the alcohol for after the ride, and if you’re going out alone, let someone know where you’re going, and when you expect to be back.
