SaskPower’s first ever utility-scale battery energy system is now on-line.
The system—referred to as BESS—is located at the SaskPower Fleet Street substation in Regina. It stores surplus renewable energy until it is needed.
BESS has the capacity to provide 20 megawatts (MW) of power to the grid—enough to power up to 20,000 home for one hour.
BESS provides added flexibility to the provincial grid and supports the crown corporation’s net-zero greenhouse gas(GHG)emission efforts.
Battery storage has more flexibility and can respond quicker to short-term power fluctuations than some of the conventional generating units on the grid. BESS will be used when demand spike for short periods of time.
