Onion Lake RCMP say three people in a black SUV with blue and red emergency lights conducted a traffic stop on Onion Lake Cree Nation this week and demanded the ID of those in the vehicle they’d pulled over.
However, the folks who had been pulled over asked for identification and accreditation of the supposed police officers but never received clear answers. The motorists continued on their way and RCMP say the individuals were described as wearing black balaclavas and tactical gear. Their clothing did not resemble an RCMP uniform.
It is illegal to impersonate a police officer. And they ask that anyone being followed by what they believe to be an imitation police vehicle contact RCMP immediately. If you’ve been pulled over or encountered the individuals described above, please contact RCMP.
The RCMP remind residents that the public can request identification from RCMP officers. If you have concerns during a police vehicle stop, you may request to see an officer’s badge and ID card. Both the badge and ID card will show the same regimental number and the ID card will have a photo. If you have further concerns, when it is safe to do so, call the RCMP to verify the identity of the officer or individual involved.
