Fifteen emergency vehicles were at the scene of a fire this morning at Prestige Flooring and Hardwood in the 2600 Block of Jasper Avenue.
Saskatoon Fire Department Acting Fire Chief Rob Hogan says the call came in around 11:30 this morning.
“After confirming no one else was inside the building, they started what we call a transitional attack on the building. As other crews arrived, there appeared to be a heavy fire load inside the building due to the nature of the type of building it is.”
Within fifteen minutes, the fire was quickly determined to warrant a second alarm.
“Which brought a total of seven engines, two ladders (trucks), our command unit and Battalion Chief to the scene.”
Armed with backup, firefighters were able to contain the fire to one corner of the roof, and the water was considered under control within three hours.
“The roof is quite compromised, so there are quite a few holes in the roof right now. They were able to attack the fire that way. They were just searching inside the door, checking to see the extent of the fire, and see where it was. We think we have a pretty good handle on it.”
He believes the fire started at the front of the building, but an investigator is still determining the cause and damage estimate, which Hogan expects to be substantial.
