The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after an 18-year-old man was found dead in a sewage lagoon near Langham. Last Saturday just after 1:00 a.m., a member of the Warman RCMP detachment noticed a truck with no taillights, on Highway 16 near Saskatoon. The officer activated the police cruiser emergency equipment, but the vehicle sped off and RCMP did not pursue the vehicle but alerted both Corman Park and Dalmeny Police Services.
A short time later, Corman Park officers observed the same vehicle heading west on Highway 16 reporting that the truck turned off the highway. Corman Park Police followed several minutes later, without emergency equipment activated and the truck left the road driving into a field out of sight of police. Warman RCMP, Corman Park and Dalmeny Police officers didn’t locate the truck, so they left. Sunday morning Dalmeny Police were notified that the registered owner of the truck hadn’t returned home. A subsequent search of the area on that same day located the truck partially submerged in the sewage lagoon near Langham.
An aerial search was conducted but the truck’s owner wasn’t found. On Monday a body was discovered floating in the sewage lagoon near Langham and was determined to be the man who owned the truck. SIRT is now investigating the conduct of all police services involved, including any relationship to the death of the 18-year-old. A final report will be issued within 90 days of the end of the investigation.
