Today recognizes contributions of workers and unions in terms of health and safety and as part of that the Saskatoon & District Labour Council is hosting their annual Labour Day Barbeque.
A media advisory from the Council notes that efforts of Canadian unions and labour organizations contributed to shorter work weeks, the weekend, and minimum labour standards to benefit all workers. To add to this, they say healthcare, student loans, social housing and public pensions have all had their foundation laid by the labour movement.
Their message this year is focusing on the affordability saying Canada’s cost-of-living has impacted the purchasing power of individuals and families. They say many, including working people, are struggling to manage the soaring costs of food, shelter and other essentials. The Labour Council points to White Buffalo Youth Lodge which recently handed out 3500 backpacks to children which is 500 more than the year before.
The barbeque is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Victoria Park near Riversdale Pool.
