An investment announced by the provincial government and the international mining giant BHP will support regional economic development in the area around BHP’s Jansen Potash Project. The province is providing $250,000 this year to the Sylvite Four-Six Regional Development Incorporation to help position the region for the growth expected because of the Jansen project around planning for housing, childcare, labour, training and education, emergency services, infrastructure and economic development and inclusive relationships. BHP is providing $500,000 over the next two years.
The mining company’s Jansen potash project is expected to contribute significantly to economic growth in the region. Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison notes that the Jansen mine is not just the biggest ever investment for BHP, it’s also the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history and investments like these create new jobs. He adds that the S4-6 supports both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities collaborating together to foster regional economic development.
S4-6 Chair and Community Navigator from Fishing Lake First Nation, Brent Sunshine, says the work done so far demonstrates how diverse stakeholders can develop impactful, sustainable solutions together.
