NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced today (Wed) that the Supply and Confidence Agreement with the Liberals is no longer in effect. He ripped it up. The agreement was struck in March of 2022, and it stated that the Liberals would agree to NDP priorities like dental care and pharmacare in exchange for the NDP caucus voting with the Liberals on key subjects.
About two weeks ago, federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon announced that he had asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board to end the work stoppage at Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City through binding arbitration, because the economic consequences for the country are too onerous. Singh told rail workers he was against that decision.
After talking about ripping up the agreement, Singh’s post became more of a campaign speech. The NDP Leader suggests the Liberals are too weak and too beholding to corporate interests to fight for people. He says there is an even bigger battle ahead, pointing to what he called the threat of Pierre Poilievre and Conservative cuts if he were to form the next government.
