Additional details have been released regarding an officer involved shooting Sunday morning on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation—about 70 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert.
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) says the initial call was made to Shellbrook RCMP at 6:45am. There was a report that a 27-year-old woman had been assaulted with a machete. Officers located the woman and she was transported to hospital by paramedics.
Just after 7:20am, two RCMP officers arrived at a second residence, where the initial assault was reported to have occurred. Shortly after their arrival, there was a confrontation involving a 31-year-old man. The officers withdrew and called for backup. In the meantime, the man had several verbal exchanges with officers as he entered and exited the residence.
Additional RCMP officers arrived and that is when a confrontation occurred during which one member of the Emergency Response Team fired a single round from a service firearm, striking the man.
RCMP provided first aid until paramedics arrived. The man was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.
A SIRT team has started an investigation. A final public report will be issued within 90 days of its completion.
SIRT’s mandate is to independently investigate incidents where an individual has died or suffered serious injury arising from the actions of on and off-duty police officers, or while in the custody of police, as well as allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.
