K+S Potash Canada announced a million-dollar donation today to two of Saskatchewan’s largest food banks. The announcement was made in Regina, but the funding is being split evenly between Regina and Saskatoon with $500,000 for each.
The funding will help support the School Food Program in Regina to help feed over 2,500 students per week with lunches, weekend snack-packs, pantry items, and a Summer Hamper Program.
It will also go towards the addition of a play structure in Regina for children while their families visit the Food Hub.
And finally, the funding will support the Nutritional Education Program in Saskatoon that combines gardening with nutritional education as well as a learning space in the building teaching young people how to grow and cook healthy food. Saskatoon’s new facility, for which fundraising is underway, will double warehouse space and bring all facilities together at one location. It will also serve all 36 food banks in the province as the administration, shipping and receiving hub for Food Banks of Saskatchewan.
K+S says the decision to support food security in Saskatchewan demonstrates that the company is dedicated to making a difference in more ways than one to help feed the world’s growing population. There are approximately 15,000 people in Regina and 25,000 in Saskatoon who utilize the food banks each month with an estimated 40 per cent being children.
