Premier Scott Moe has sent a letter to the federal government asking for immediate action to end the labour dispute at the British Columbia ports because of the negative impact for Canada’s export economy. He suggests the federal government did the right thing earlier this year when there was a rail disruption, and he asks for the same today.
His letter posted on social media says he is concerned about the impacts to the supply chain. The Premier appreciates that federal mediators are on site to assist both sides, but Moe would like the government to intervene and implement measures to prevent a work stoppage that would severely impact trade across the country. He suggests it could idle as much as $800 million a day worth of trade.
Moe says Canada and Saskatchewan’s success in overseas markets relies on our exporters delivering their quality products on time. He brought up the idea of back-to-work legislation or a directive for binding arbitration which would prevent a work stoppage.
