Newly elected US President could create challenges for Canadian agriculture

Donald Trump will return to the Oval Office early next year after winning Tuesday’s Presidential election.

What will this mean for international trade as well as imports and exports between Canada and the United States?

Trump campaigned on implementing tariffs—specifically against China, which would impact US corn and soybean producers. Canada also faces the prospect of re-negotiating the U.S/Canada/Mexico free trade agreement in 2026. The supply managed sector (dairy and poultry) will be on the list of items that Trump will likely want to change.

CJWW Agriculture Director Neil Billinger interviewed Stephen Nicholson—a global sector strategist for grains and oilseeds with Rabobank in St.Louis. This is a portion of the interview recorded the morning after the election.
