There are more than 20 resolutions on the table for the SARM Midterm convention on Wednesday and Thursday, including one calling for a maximum of three consecutive two-year terms for SARM President and Vice President.
The resolution from the RM of Elfros says shorter terms would bring new ideas, relationships, knowledge and energy to the positions every few years. The last SARM President, Ray Orb, held the post for ten years. SARM Acting President Bill Huber has mixed feelings on the subject.
Huber says the SARM mid-term is a “learning convention” Some councillors and reeves were elected for the first time last week and there will be a special session for them. SARM will have the traditional workshops on subjects such as public sector procurement, the Municipalities Act review and understanding assessment and preparing for the 2025 revaluation.
Peer group sessions are a new addition to the agenda. Moderators will lead smaller discussions on four topics—irrigation, RMs bordering larger cities, oil and gas tax arrears and renewable energy projects.
