The RCMP say November is the month of online shopping and cyber deals with Black Friday and Cyber Monday and they are cautioning residents to practice cyber safety when shopping online.
Some of their tips include only buy from reputable sources to avoid having your credit card details stolen. Avoid using public Wi-Fi especially when making transactions or accessing banking or other sensitive personal information. Change your passwords often. Do not click links on phishing messages. These are messages that ask you to validate your information or threaten you with legal action. Check your accounts frequently and make sure the transactions are ones you have made.
And if you believe you may be a victim of fraud, or are currently being targeted by fraud, report it to your local law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501 or through theĀ Fraud Reporting System.
