During the fall economic statement Monday, the federal government revealed that Terry Fox has been selected to appear on the next $5 bank note.
The Bank of Canada in choosing Fox to be part of the eight-name shortlist, said Terry Fox campaigned to raise national awareness and funding for cancer research by running his Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada 42-km daily run, on his prosthetic leg. By February 1981, $24.7 million had been raised, or $1 for every Canadian.
After 143 days and 5,373 kilometres, Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The cancer had returned and this time it was in his lungs.
The annual fundraising run in his name has raised more than $850 million for cancer research.
Fox will replace Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who will move from the $5 bill to the $50 note.
