All Saskatchewan school divisions are required to develop and implement a changeroom policy according to a release from the provincial government this morning (Thurs). The release states that the policy will be used by school staff when dealing with situations such as student safety and privacy, and it must be made publicly available online by June 30, 2025.
School divisions opted to develop the policies at a local level and were instructed to do so involving input from both students and parents. Education Minister Everett Hindley explains that the province wants “to ensure privacy, dignity and comfort of all students. It is also important for parents and guardians to be aware of the steps being taken to ensure the comfort and safety of all students.”
During the provincial election campaign, Scott Moe had said that a school change room policy banning “biological boys” from using change rooms with “biological girls” would be his first order of business, but afterwards, in his victory speech, the Premier said the closer results in this election indicated that the Sask Party government must do better, and they heard that message.
A joint statement from NDP Shadow Minister for Education, Matt Love and Shadow Minister for Human Rights, Jacqueline Roy, says they are both surprived the government is focusing on changeroom policies when there are more pressing issues facing Saskatchewan. They point to short staffing at hospitals and health centres leading to closures, the rising cost of living and the trade war with the U.S., which Love and Royu could “wipe out entire industries and communities in our province.”
