On his first day in office, right after his first cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the ‘Consumer Carbon Price’, or what we know as the carbon tax would be eliminated as of April 1st. He added that the carbon tax rebates scheduled for April will still go ahead.
He made the announcement while sitting with his cabinet, in front of the media, similar to what we have seen south of the border when U.S. President Donald Trump signs his executive orders. This time it was Prime Minister Mark Carney signing an order-in-council. However, the carbon tax remains for large, industrial emitters.
Carney said, “This will make a difference to hard pressed Canadians, but it is part of a much bigger set of measures that this government is taking to ensure that we fight against climate change, that our companies are competitive, and the country moves forward.
