The Saskatchewan Highway Patrol is the new name for the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement group and with the new name comes new responsibilities.
Last August, the provincial government announced a Protection and Response Team to help reduce rural crime and to be able to respond more quickly.
The PRT includes commercial vehicle enforcement officers, conservation officers, the RCMP and municipal police.
The Highways and Infrastructure Minister, David Marit, says although commercial vehicle enforcement remains the primary function for the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol, some of their other responsibilities include responding to accidents, enforcing speed limits and other traffic violations and responding to 911 calls.
Members of the Highway Patrol have received extensive training to prepare them for them for their new roles.
That includes training in the enhanced use of force, learning how to clear a house of suspects and conduct high-risk vehicle stops.
The officers have also been trained on dealing with people with mental health issues.
Their new role begins July 1st.
