A sad day for Canadian dairy producers.
Henk and Bettina Schuurman from Elmira, Ontario were involved in an accident on Highway 16 between Saskatoon and Langham on Monday morning.
Bettina, 55, was killed and her husband is in stable condition in a Saskatoon hospital. The truck driver was not injured.
The Schuurmans were on a cross country tour to talk to consumers about supply management and its benefits for the dairy sector.
The couple spent Friday afternoon in Regina handing out free milk, buttons and information to consumers in the downtown area.
The Schurmanns were in Saskatoon on the weekend and toured the University of Saskatchewan. They also met with a number of dairy producers at both locations.
“They are warm and engaging people,” says Joy Smith, Sask Milk’s manager of policy and communications. “They drove thousands of miles, talking to consumers and staying with dairy farmers. They have really touched a lot of people.”
A GoFundMe page has been started on behalf of the Schuurman family.
