Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay has announced a federal investment of up to $39 million to advance crop research. Speaking in Saskatoon, MacAulay says various grain sectors will add another $28 million in research, bringing the total to almost $68 million. Mike Cey of Ag West Bio of Saskatoon says his organization will lead research on 7 diverse crops like flax, mustard and sunflowers. He says the overall big picture goal across the seven crops is to double the production value . Combined, they are at about $1 billion right now. They would like to double that by 2023. The diverse crop cluster will focus on variety development, crop protection and value-added practices.
