Research by Laval University in Quebec warns that overhunting could cause the extinction of free-roaming plains bison in Saskatchewan’s Prince Albert National Park. The Sturgeon River herd has decreased to about 120 animals from 500 in 2015. Researchers say it’s clear overhunting is the problem, because annoyed landowners call First Nations and ask them to deal with the animals. Parks Canada says it’s been meeting with Indigenous communities and working to keep the animals within park boundaries, where they can’t be hunted.
