City of Saskatoon crews are starting to put out temporary 30 kilometre an hour speed signs in work zones on residential streets.
Saskatoon’s General Manager of Utilities and Environment says it’s an added reminder for drivers to slow down.
Angela Gardiner says drivers are becoming more compliant but there are still too many ignoring work zone signs risking the lives of workers.
Saskatoon Police Traffic Unit Staff Sergeant Patrick Barber says it’s not only the law it’s the responsibility of every driver to obey work zone signs.
Fines for getting caught going 50 km an hour through a 30 km work zone start at 190-dollars and increase with the speed of the offending driver.
Barber says the 30 km limit is also a safety feature as studies show a pedestrian hit by a car at that speed is almost 90-percent more likely to survive.
The Staff Sergeant also points out adhering to the speed limit through a work zone only adds about ten seconds to a driver’s trip.
