It’s back for an 11th year.
Operation Red Nose volunteers in the Saskatoon area will drive clients and their vehicles home every Friday and Saturday as well as New year’s Eve beginning November 29th.
Operation Red Nose President Tom Armstrong says they supplied close to one thousand rides last year raising over 9-thousand dollars for three local youth related charities including Ronald McDonald House.
Armstrong points out all money donated goes to the charities including the Saskatoon Lions Club Speed Skating organization and the club’s band.
The Saskatoon Millennium Lions Club member says there are no minimum or maximum donations noting he was given 100-dollars from a Martinsville client last year because that was what it was worth to get him and his vehicle home safely.
Armstrong who has been involved for the last eight years also says there have been no negative incidents adding that volunteers have enjoyed their interactions with clients who are doing the right thing by not drinking and driving.
Impairment isn’t the only reason people call for rides. Armstrong says some are simply too tired to drive.
Operation Red Nose volunteers will take calls from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and ensure everyone who calls will get rides.
The phone number is 639-480-nose (6673).
Armstrong says the numbers for all Operation Red Nose communities across Canada are available by downloading the app which also has volunteer information for anyone willing to step forward.
This year’s service is dedicated to Chanda and Jordan Van de Vorst and their children, Kamryn and Miguire, who were killed by a drunk driver in January 2016.
