The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture has updated its clubroot distribution map.
The eight new cases were reported in calendar year 2019 through a survey of 1,700 fields, as well as a free producer program that saw another 180 samples submitted.
Four of the eight new cases were found in the producer sampling program, which is sponsored by the Saskatchewan Government and SaskCanola.
“The soil testing kits were a big help in determining where in the province clubroot is located,” said Lane Stockbrugger, SaskCanola Chair. “With clubroot’s potential to negatively impact the canola industry, this survey is a very important investment for SaskCanola.”
In addition to the eight new confirmed cases, the clubroot pathogen was detected in five fields without visible symptoms in 2019.
Saskatchewan has been monitoring and surveying the progress of clubroot for three years. The disease, which impacts the plant roots ability to obtain water and nutrients, is more prevalent in Alberta. More than 3,000 confirmed cases of clubroot have been documented in Alberta.
Saskatchewan hopes to limit the spread of clubroot through recommended agronomic practices, such as seeding canola on the same field only one every three or four years.
