A fire investigator says the improper use of an extension cord was the cause of a fire at a home in Silverwood Heights early Sunday afternoon.
Everybody in the home on the 100 block of Stechishin Crescent had already evacuated and was uninjured before crews arrived. The investigator says the extension cord was pinched beneath a piece of furniture when it overheated, began arcing, and ignited nearby items.
It took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control.
The damage estimate is around $150-thousand.
The Fire Prevention and Investigation section says extension cords are intended for temporary use only and can pose a serious hazard when used incorrectly. Never run extension cords across doorways or under carpets; this increases the possibility of a fire and also a fall.
